Lactation Services and Breastfeeding Medicine

THE OSTEOPATHIC WAY
lactation services and breastfeeding medicine at the osteopathic way

Dr. Sibyl Knight practices breastfeeding medicine and offers lactation services for her patients. She has been practicing breastfeeding medicine for over 6 years and is currently working on obtaining her IBCLC.

Breastfeeding medicine includes evaluation of the breastfeeding dyad (lactating parent, usually mother and the infant or toddler) to search for anything that may be impeding the breastfeeding relationship. This can include musculoskeletal issues with the infant (treated with Osteopathic Manipulation), tongue tie evaluation, latch difficulties, low milk supply and oversupply, sore nipples, clogged ducts, engorgement, slow weight gain, nipple or breast infections, or other challenges.

Discussion includes feeding patterns and strategies with the mother or parent. Often she sees both the mother or parent as well as the infant or toddler as patients for Osteopathic Manipulation. She soon plans to do scissor frenotomies (tongue tie release) in the office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Breastfeeding Medicine is practiced by physicians who have knowledge in the complex nature of breastfeeding or chestfeeding.  Often patients think they should just “know how” to breastfeed, however it can be very challenging for a variety of reasons.  Dr. Knight is able to help with latch and any anatomical issues that may be impeding the breastfeeding relationship but also provide advice for many of the different issues that come up when pursuing breastfeeding or chestfeeding.

Sadly the way doctors are educated today does not contain much about breastfeeding or feeding a child human milk.  Most doctors, unless they have pursued Breastfeeding Medicine on their own, have not learned about basic aspects of breastfeeding, including how a latch is formed.  Very few are trained in both Osteopathic Manipulation as well as breastfeeding.

Dr. Knight breastfed her own two children for about 2 years each and experienced some of the stigma and challenges of it firsthand. While breastfeeding her first child she discovered Breastfeeding Medicine and dove head first into learning everything she could about human lactation and breastfeeding. She has helped hundreds of women and parents start and maintain their breastfeeding relationship with their children. Her skillset of being able to treat infants and toddlers allows her to directly effect latch mechanics is invaluable to breastfeeding, and she is constantly striving to learn more about breastfeeding and is pursuing her IBCLC certification.
